The University of North Carolina System avoided $103 million in utility costs in the 2013-14 academic year, according to Len Hoey, energy engineering manager at the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The rankings keep rolling in for Appalachian State University and other N.C. schools. Recently The Business Journals, a division of American City Business Journals, published their top ranking of the nation’s 484 public colleges and universities.

Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents the costume drama “The Countess.” Dr. Paulette Marty, a theatre faculty professor who specializes in theatre history, dramatic literature, dramaturgy, and cross-disciplinary topics, directs the production.
US Conec, a Hickory-based fiber optic cables and connection hardware manufacturer, has contributed $5,000 to support the 2015 Future Engineers’ Camp operated by the N.C. Center for Engineering Technologies. The center, also located in Hickory, operates week-long day camps each summer for area school students from 3rd to 10th grade.
The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Partnership has awarded $7,000 to the Center for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University to develop lesson plans about North Carolina’s music traditions.
