BOONE, N.C.—James J. “J.J.” Brown III has been named vice chancellor for student development at Appalachian State University. He will begin the role on May 1, 2017.
“J.J. has served Appalachian with excellence and distinction as associate vice chancellor for student development and dean of students since 2010, and his passion and commitment to Appalachian and dedication to the success of our students are recognized and appreciated by the entire Appalachian Community,” said Chancellor Sheri N. Everts.
The vice chancellor for student development is the chief student affairs officer of the university and reports to the chancellor. The position assists the chancellor in meeting the university’s mission and strategic objectives, and provides strategic advice to the chancellor related to student development and success. The position is responsible for a staff of more than 250 and manages an annual revenue budget of $46 million.
Brown has held the position of associate vice chancellor for student development and dean of students at Appalachian since June 2010. Prior to joining Appalachian, he worked in a variety of capacities at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for more than 16 years, where he was most recently associate dean of students and also held positions as director of the Office of Student Orientation and Leadership Development and interim assistant director of the University Honors Program, among others.
Brown holds a B.A. in speech communication and a M.Ed. in college student personnel from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well as numerous professional certifications, including from SafeZone, the National Incident Management System and the FBI Citizen’s Academy.

The Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University directs its educational efforts at fostering the intellect and character of students by integrating in-class and co-curricular experiences. To accomplish this, the university provides a range of educational experiences that complement and support the academic experience in the classroom.
