The Office of the Chief Diversity Officer presents:

For Staff: Comprehensive Strategic Diversity Plan Listening Charrette

Tuesday, Feb. 16, 20214 p.m.Add to Google Calendar
Presented online via Zoom
Register now (for staff)

The Office of the Chief Diversity Officer will host three Comprehensive Strategic Diversity Plan Listening Charrettes — one session each for staff, faculty and students. The listening charrettes create an opportunity for the campus community to be heard and to provide meaningful dialogue concerning this plan, which is a fluid, living document.

App State’s Chief Diversity Officer's (CDO) Advisory Board has worked steadfastly on the Comprehensive Strategic Diversity Plan since 2018. The Spring 2021 Listening Charrettes are a significant part of the vetting and rollout of the plan to our campus.

Five broad goals are outlined in the plan, with several sub-goals. The listening charrettes will give campus community members a platform to discuss their concerns, communicate support and make suggestions regarding those goals.

Transcript

Willie Fleming: I'm Willie Fleming, Chief Diversity Officer here at Appalachian State University, we appreciate your participation in the Charrette Listening Sessions.

The CDO Advisory Board has been working on our Strategic Diversity Plan since 2018. Our ultimate goal is to further move Appalachian State University toward achieving inclusive excellence, that includes initiatives involving students, faculty, and staff. This Strategic Diversity Plan provides recommendations, metrics, and guidance regarding diversity and inclusion strategies for strategic improvement.

And so you may be wondering, "What are the listening charrettes?"

The listening charrettes will create an opportunity for the campus community to be heard and provide meaningful dialogue concerning  this plan. This is a fluid, living document. Each goal of the Strategic Diversity Plan will be assigned a breakout room. The participants will have the opportunity to move from breakout room to breakout room to talk about the goals. The breakout rooms will run in 20 minute cycles during the 1 hour session, and we will also have a form that participants complete if they don’t get to share all of their comments or have additional comments or questions after the session.

And so you might also wonder, "Why it’s important for the campus community to participate?"

The collective voice of the campus community needs to be heard concerning the Strategic Diversity Plan and, as stated before, there needs to be meaningful dialogue concerning this matter.

And so, what are we going to do with the information from the sessions?

As we get feedback from our campus community, that information will be considered and shared with the greater campus community and stakeholders. The information gathered during the meetings will be used to help direct any proposed revisions to this plan. Feedback from the campus community will also help to build a broad narrative for an understanding of what is needed and wanted concerning diversity and inclusion at Appalachian State. The CDO Advisory Board is committed to reporting back to the campus with summaries of this event and additional information by April 2021.

Invitations for campus community to join on February 16th for staff, February 17th for students, and February the 18th for faculty.

We appreciate your participation and look forward to seeing you at the charrette listening sessions. Thank you so very much.

What is a listening charrette?

Typically, charrettes are used to gather opinions and ideas from a diverse array of stakeholders when it comes to building designs. For these virtual events, the CDO Advisory Board has paired the structure of charrettes with a traditional town hall-style meeting to create an atmosphere that fosters collaborative and robust conversation around the goals of the Comprehensive Strategic Diversity Plan.

How will the information be used?

The information gathered during the listening charrettes will be used to help direct any proposed revisions to the plan. Feedback from the campus community will also help to build a broad narrative for and understanding of what is needed and wanted concerning diversity and inclusion at App State.

The CDO Advisory Board is committed to reporting back to the campus with summaries of this event and additional information by April 2021.

Important notes about the listening charrettes
