Women’s History Month

Appalachian State University
March 2024

App State celebrates women and their numerous achievements and contributions — which have shaped our university, state, nation and world — during Women’s History Month. A variety of events and activities will be held during the university’s monthlong celebration, from a “Women of Color in Academia” panel and networking event to App State’s 10th Annual Selu Lecture honoring the contributions of contemporary Cherokee women leaders.

Please join the App State Student American Indian Movement (SAIM) and the Gadugi Partnership as we celebrate Women’s History Month with a talk from App alum and former SAIM president Tori Hunt. Tori will share her month-long experience as a science fellow aboard the E/V Nautilus in the Pacific, and her work incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and learning into the sciences. The event is free and open to the public. We encourage you to bring your lunch. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

The Appalachian State Women's Center is celebrating the Women's Center's 25th Anniversary and kicking off Women's History Month this March with a craft talk from Appalachian author, Halle Hill! Halle Hill will be discussing her book, Good Women, in which she tells the stories of twelve Black women in the Appalachian South. Good Women was named "Best Book of the Year" by Kirkus Reviews, O Magazine, Electric Literature, Book Riot and Southwest Review.

The Gadugi Partnership, App State's Student American Indian Movement, and the Office of Diversity invite you to help us celebrate Women's History Month with the 10th Annual Selu Lecture. This year we welcome Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian (ECBI) citizen Joi Owle. In 2023, Ms. Owle decided to step up and run for Tribal Council. She will talk about her decision to run and the lessons she learned while seeking elected office.

This panel and networking event will feature five faculty women of color from the ranks of App State. The first portion of our event, the panel, will be an opportunity for our panelists to discuss and share their experiences as women of color working in academia. Following the panel, participants will break into small groups, where they will discuss and reflect on themes discussed by our panelists.

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is dedicated to teaching female-identifying participants defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault by utilizing easy, effective, and proven self-defense and martial arts tactics. Our system of realistic defense will provide participants with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. Certified RAD instructors teach this course.
