BOONE—The Boone Optimist Club has awarded its Police Officer of the Year Award to senior police officer James H. Robertson from the Appalachian State University Police Department. This year, the club honored one officer from each of the law enforcement agencies within the Town of Boone.

A Florida native, Robertson graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Wilkes Community College in 2007. While attending BLET, he participated in several ride-a-longs with Appalachian’s Police Department and was later hired as a police officer in December 2007.

During his seven-plus years of service at Appalachian, Robertson has developed a reputation for being a highly competent, caring and professional police officer who leads by example. He has completed more than 2,000 training hours, is certified as a Field Training Officer and RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) instructor and bike officer.

In addition to his law enforcement duties, Robertson has been active in providing drug and alcohol education programs for students on campus. His work with students in community policing has earned him several accolades from the university community.
