Three-minute thesis competition held Jan. 21 at Appalachian

BOONE—Seventeen graduate students at Appalachian State University will have three minutes to explain their research or scholarly/creative projects as part of the 3MT Three Minute Thesis competition to be held Jan. 21 at Appalachian State University.

The competition will be held from 2-4 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Linville Falls Room, The presentations will include research in the fields of geography, biology, English, sustainable technology, psychology and Appalachian studies. The public is invited to attend.

3MT is an international competition during which graduate student explain their research or scholarly/creative projects to the general public with the use of no more than one PowerPoint slide. The winner of the competition will be invited to attend a regional competition held in February in Charlotte. A panel of community, industry and alumni representatives will judge the presentations.

The winner and runner-up(s) will also be honored at the spring Graduate Student Awards reception and will travel in May to represent Appalachian at Graduate Education Day held in the capital in Raleigh.

The local competition is sponsored by the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies.

The winner and her or his faculty mentor will be invited to compete at the regional 3MR competition held in February in Charlotte. The regional competition is hosted by the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools.

The Three Minute Thesis competition was started at Australia’s Queensland University in 2008. Currently, the competition is held in 19 countries around the world.
