BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University’s Alumni Association recognized four Mountaineers at the 2025 Alumni Awards Gala, held July 12 in the Grandview Ballroom of Kidd Brewer Stadium’s north end zone facility. Nine alumni from the university’s academic colleges, as well as the Honors College, Williams School of Graduate Studies and University Libraries, were also honored.

“As we celebrate and honor these extraordinary alumni, we also thank them for their incredible contributions to both Appalachian State University and society. These exemplary individuals serve as shining examples to our past, present and future students — who continue to build on their legacy.”

The annual event recognizes graduates who have made a lasting impact on society and the university through their outstanding professional, philanthropic and volunteer accomplishments. In addition, awardees from App State’s colleges/schools and University Libraries are honored for their accomplishments in their respective fields, as well as for their continued service and engagement with the university community.

The university’s 2025 honorees:

  • Kimberly Shepherd ’97 received the Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes individuals who have attained extraordinary distinction and success in their career field and have demonstrated exceptional and sustained leadership in their community.
  • Retired U.S. Army Col. Edna Cummings ’78 also received the Distinguished Alumni Award.
  • Phillip Ostwalt ’83 received the Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes individuals for their exceptional service to the university.
  • Bryson Stewart ’09 received the Young Alumni Award, which is given to individuals under 40 years of age for their exceptional service to the university and accomplishments in their career.

Distinguished Alumni Award — Kimberly Shepherd ’97

Shepherd graduated magna cum laude from App State in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics-secondary education. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University.

Shepherd is chief executive officer of SkyLine Membership Corp. — one of the largest telecommunication cooperatives in the nation — based in West Jefferson. She has worked for the cooperative for 28 years, assuming her current role in July 2018. Prior to being named CEO, Shepherd served as chief management officer, overseeing all operations of the company and playing a pivotal role in the expansion of broadband internet access in rural communities across North Carolina.

Shepherd is a member of multiple industry boards, including Carolina West Wireless, Telcom Insurance Group, AccessOn Networks Inc., the Carolina-Virginias Broadband Membership Association, the North Carolina Broadband Cooperative Coalition and the Tennessee Broadband Association, and is also a member of the North Carolina Rural Center. She serves on App State’s Board of Trustees and chaired the board from 2021 to 2023. Shepherd previously served on the App State Foundation Board of Directors from 2020 to 2023.

Shepherd attends Pleasant View Baptist Church in Lansing, where she serves as church clerk. She loves to spend time with her husband, Derek, their children, Ethan and Emma, and their three grandchildren on their family farm, which was previously owned by Shepherd’s grandfather, an alumnus of Appalachian State Teachers College.

Distinguished Alumni Award — Edna Cummings ’78

Cummings, a retired Army colonel, graduated from App State in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences-education. She earned a Master of Science in foundations of education from Troy State University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Army War College.

She currently serves as vice president of Windsor Group LLC and is an Army Reserve ambassador for the state of Maryland. Her career has included service with the U.S. Northern Command, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the Office of the Chief of Army Reserve and the Pentagon’s Army Operations Center. She has been a passionate advocate for the recognition of the efforts of Black women serving in World War II, particularly the all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, also known as the Six Triple Eight. Her work led to the passage of the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021.

Cummings is a member of the Army Women’s Foundation Hall of Fame and serves on the organization’s board of directors. She has been recognized as a national changemaker by the Military Officers Association of America and is a recipient of the NAACP Jesse Brown Distinguished Leadership Award. In 2023, she was honored with the U.S. Army War College Foundation’s Outstanding Alumna Award.

Cummings was instrumental in establishing the Appalachian Warrior Fund at App State, which benefits honorably discharged and disabled veterans and their children who pursue higher education at the university. She also served on the App State Foundation Board of Directors from 2014 to 2018.

Outstanding Service Award — Phillip Ostwalt ’83

Ostwalt graduated from App State in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University. Ostwalt serves as president and chief executive officer of DL Phillips Investment Builders Inc., a third-generation, family-owned commercial real estate business in Charlotte. As a certified public accountant and certified fraud examiner, he previously held domestic and global leadership roles for KPMG in risk consulting, forensics and investigations, retiring as partner in 2017.

Ostwalt has supported multiple scholarships at App State and has been a member of the Walker College of Business Advisory Council since 2005. He has also served on the App State Foundation Board and is a member of the university’s Chancellor’s Society and the Yosef Club.

He also recently completed extensive training to become a certified professional coach to support business executives, entrepreneurs and professionals in the accounting and consulting fields.

Young Alumni Award — Bryson Stewart ’09

Stewart graduated from App State in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He is senior vice president of product management, overseeing both the RYOBI and RIDGID brands at Techtronic Industries (TTI). He leads cross-functional teams in the development and management of products for the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand markets.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Stewart was instrumental in coordinating the donation of more than 300 RYOBI and RIDGID power tools to the university to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts following the storm, providing essential support to App State staff, faculty and students, as well as the community.

Stewart also invests in current App State students by participating in mock interviews through the Walker College of Business, giving Mountaineers the opportunity to hone their interview skills before entering the workforce following graduation.

During his time at App State, Stewart was a member of App State’s NCAA Division 1-AA football team under coach Jerry Moore.

Alumni honorees — academic colleges

Beaver College of Health Sciences

Moore graduated from App State in 2001 with bachelor’s degrees in health care management and marketing. Moore currently serves as chief executive officer of AMOREM, (formerly Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care and Burke Hospice and Palliative Care) and has over 20 years of hospice and serious illness experience.

Moore was instrumental in completing the integration between Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care and Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in 2021 and oversaw multiple renovation and building projects, including the AMOREM SECU Patient Care Unit of the High Country, opening in summer 2025.

She has served on the advisory boards for App State’s health care management program and Master of Health Administration program since 2015 and 2018, respectively. Moore is a member of the Beaver College of Health Sciences Trillium Society and the Yosef Club. Moore’s son, Sam, is a current student and a fourth-generation Mountaineer.

Haley Hopper Gentry ’91

College of Arts and Sciences

Gentry graduated from App State in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. In June 2021, Gentry was appointed chief executive officer of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), becoming the first woman to lead the airport.

Gentry began her career as an intern in 1991 and has held multiple roles at CLT. Before her appointment as CEO, she served as acting CLT director for nearly a year. During her tenure, Gentry has led key projects that include CLT’s COVID-19 response, the $608 million Destination CLT Terminal Lobby Expansion and the construction of CLT’s $1 billion fourth parallel runway, scheduled to open in 2027. She also led the launch of CLT’s prebook online parking program and the creation of the Destination District. Gentry manages CLT’s 6,000-acre campus, which includes a state-of-the-art airfield, a 2.4 million-square-foot terminal and a fixed-base operator for corporate aviation with a charter terminal, a military base for the 145th Airlift Wing of the North Carolina Air National Guard, an air cargo center and American Airlines support campus.

Gentry is active in the American Association of Airport Executives, Airports Council International and Women in Aviation International. She also serves on the Renaissance West Community Initiative board and is a trustee of the Sullenberger Aviation Museum.

G. Perry ‘Skip’ Greene Jr. ’69

College of Fine and Applied Arts

Greene graduated from App State in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology.

After completing military service with the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees), Greene joined his family’s business, Greene Construction, in Boone. He and his brother took over the company from their father in the mid-1970s, and the company has grown significantly under their leadership. He has volunteered with NC Baptist Men on Mission, using his construction knowledge to assist with disaster relief and international missions around the world.

Greene serves on the Advisory Council of App State’s Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment and helped establish a scholarship in his father’s name. He is a proud supporter of the Mountaineers and follows App State’s football team whenever possible.

Greene’s roots at the university run deep. He was born at Watauga County Hospital, which is now Watson-Brumit Hall on the Boone campus. He attended Appalachian Elementary School, which was located where the College Street Parking Deck now sits, and Appalachian High School, which was located in what is now Chapell Wilson Hall. He met his wife at the university, and one of their two daughters is an App State alumna.

Ann Eddy Ward ’76

Hayes School of Music

Ward graduated from App State in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She began her teaching career as a middle school band and orchestra director in Lee County Schools for three years and continued in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools from 1980 to 2007. During her tenure, Ward’s students consistently earned excellent and superior ratings at regional music festivals. Following her retirement, Ward returned to the classroom as a substitute instrumental music teacher and tutor, continuing to share her passion for music education.

In addition to her work in music education, Ward has served as a wedding director at Myers Park Presbyterian Church for 35 years and has participated in handbell ensembles for more than four decades.

She has served as president of the Matthews Concert Band for adult musicians for nearly 10 years. After learning of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, particularly at Valle Crucis School, she spearheaded a fundraiser with the band that raised over $5,000 and enabled the donation of more than 30 instruments to the school's instrumental music program.

Dr. Annette Lytle Ranft ’86

Honors College

Ranft graduated from App State in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics-secondary education. At Wake Forest University, Ranft serves as dean of the School of Business, as the F.M. Kirby Foundation Chair in Business Excellence and as a professor of strategic management. She began her career as a high school mathematics teacher and then worked in the industry, at AT&T and Electronic Data Systems, before returning to academia to pursue a doctoral degree in strategic management.

Ranft has authored or co-authored more than 40 scholarly publications on management-related topics, and her work has appeared in top journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Organization Science and the Journal of International Business Studies, among others. She has served on the editorial board of the Strategic Management Journal and was associate editor for the Journal of Management. Her research in acquisitions of high-tech firms has received global recognition through the Academy of Management, and she was recognized in The Wall Street Journal’s list of top female business administrators.

Elizabeth Gomersall Bumgarner ’81

Reich College of Education

Bumgarner graduated from App State in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education grades four through nine, with a concentration in science.

After graduating from App State, Bumgarner taught for 10 years in Tampa, Florida, and received the Teacher of the Year award from Bay Crest Elementary School. While living in Florida, she also assisted App State by attending college fairs to recruit future Mountaineers.

She and her family later returned to North Carolina, where Bumgarner volunteered at Davie County Schools, providing small-group reading instruction, mentoring beginning teachers and hosting meals for student teachers. She received the Volunteer of the Year award twice from Davie County Schools.

Bumgarner served two terms on the Reich College of Education’s Advancement Board, and she is now an emerita board member. She continues to be a cheerleader and supporter for education, and has since returned to Florida, where she volunteers at her grandson’s school in Melbourne.

Nanci Tolbert Nance ’73

University Libraries

Nance attended Appalachian State Teachers College from 1960 to 1963 and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1973 with a master’s degree in English/secondary education. After more than 30 years of teaching, she retired as chair of the English department at Watauga High School in 1996.

Nance has served Southern Wayne High School, Appalachian State University and Watauga High School, volunteered at institutions, including Valle Crucis School and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, and been active in the North Carolina English Teachers Association and National Council of Teachers of English.

Nance met her husband, Larry, when they were students at Appalachian State Teachers College, and their son, Geoffrey, was born in Watauga County Hospital, now known as Watson-Brumit Hall.

Nance continues to be an engaged member of the university community. She is a member of the University Libraries Council, supports the Library Student Employee Scholarship Fund and serves as volunteer librarian and Community Council member for the university’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies. Nance and her husband also support the Yosef Club and An Appalachian Summer, and are members of An Appalachian Summer’s Founders Society.

Kathryn ‘Kathy’ Oszmianski Pou ’79

Walker College of Business

Pou graduated from App State in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Since then, she has remained a steadfast supporter of the Walker College of Business.

Pou was born and raised in Plant City, Florida. She has lived in Lakeland, Florida, for the past 25 years. Prior to this, she lived in Haines City, Florida, for 20 years. Pou has been involved in philanthropy and civic life while raising three sons — Andrew, Benjamin and William — with her husband, Bill. They have five grandchildren who are sixth-generation Floridians.

Her commitment to education and service are reflected in her philanthropy and volunteer work. She has served as a trustee for Lees-McRae College and as a board member of Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College. Pou and her beloved dog, Maggie, have participated in pet therapy work at Lakeland Regional Health and Roberts Academy.

She is currently serving on the Mission Advancement Board of Dogs Inc.

Robert R. ‘Skip’ Harkrader III ’78 ’83

Williams School of Graduate Studies

Harkrader graduated from App State in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in community and regional planning. He subsequently returned to the university and received his master’s degree in political science and government in 1983.

Harkrader has spent the majority of his career working in planning and economic development, primarily at the local level. His employment has included positions as planning and economic development director for the City of Burlington and director of planning for Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He is a past board member of the North Carolina League of Municipalities, past president of the North Carolina Community Development Association and a graduate of the South Carolina Economic Developers School at the College of Charleston.

Harkrader supports a broad range of graduate education and health care education initiatives at the university. He is a proud Yosef Club member and longtime App State football and basketball season ticket holder.
