BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) Program announces the start of its Home School Physical Education Program for the 2016-17 academic year. Classes for home-schooled pupils will meet from 1- 1:50 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in the university’s Varsity Gymnasium. Students ages 5 to 12 can participate at an annual cost of $30 per child. Registration is underway and students can be enrolled as long as slots are available.
Classes are taught by junior-level physical education majors in the HPE program in conjunction with a university course in elementary physical education teaching methods.
The HPE Program is overseen by Dr. Benjamin Sibley, a licensed K-12 physical education teacher and associate professor in the Department of Recreation Management and Physical Education in the Beaver College of Health Sciences. Sibley’s research interests are psychological determinants of exercise behavior and teaching of health-related fitness.
Instructors use the Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) program, a collection of exemplary, research-based physical activity/nutrition programs. SPARK has been shown to improve students’ motor skills, to improve students’ fitness, and to be enjoyable for students in a variety of research studies.
