BOONE—Dr. Nancy Bargerstock, violin, and Dr. Bair Shagdaron, piano, will present a faculty performance at 8 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. This is a Hayes School of Music event. Admission is free, and a live stream of the performance will be available at http://music.appstate.edu.
The program will begin and end with a famous violin sonata: “Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 12, No. 3” by Ludwig van Beethoven and “Violin Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 80” by Sergei Prokofiev. Bargerstock and Shagdaron will be featured in both works.
Bargerstock and Shagdaron have performed and recorded together often. Their recording of the Prokofiev sonata was distributed several years ago on the Calavista label; they last performed it at Appalachian in 2005.
Bargerstock, who joined Appalachian’s music faculty in 1999, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Julliard School in New York. She holds a soloist diploma in viola from the Orfeo Conservatory of Music in Athens, Greece. She holds a doctorate in violin performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
As part of the Oct. 19 program at Rosen Concert Hall, Bargerstock will team up with Dr. Eric Koontz, viola, for a performance of “Duo Passacaglia” (1897), which Johan Halvorsen composed on a theme from Handel’s “Harpsichord Suite in G Minor.”
Shagdaron, a native of Moscow, received his doctorate degree in piano performance from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He began teaching at Appalachian in 2000.
As part of the Oct. 19 program at Rosen Concert Hall, Shagdaron will perform four works for solo piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff: “Daisies, Op. 38, No. 3” as well as “Prelude in F Minor, Op. 32, No. 6”; “Prelude in G-sharp Minor, Op. 32, No. 12”; and “Prelude in G Minor, Op. 23, No. 5.”
