BOONE—The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will present three concerts through Nov. 20.

Unless otherwise noted, the performances will take place in the Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the university campus. Admission is free, and a live stream of the performances will be available at http://music.appstate.edu. Details of the events are as follows:

Concerto-Aria Competition Finals Recital, 8 p.m. Nov. 19

This concert is part of an annual competition. The first round of the competition was held Nov. 4, with 32 students competing and a panel of judges selecting eight of them to advance to the finals. The winners will perform with the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra at 2 p.m. Feb. 12, 2017, in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.

In this recital, the eight finalists will each solo in a version for piano and instrument.

Rachel Davis, a bassonist, will solo in Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “Ciranda das sete notas.” Soprano Suzanne Brown will sing selections from operas by Jules Massenet and Carlisle Floyd. Clarinetist Andrew Paluszak will perform Claude Debussy’s “Première Rhapsodie.”

Christopher Moore, a tuba player, will perform Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra.” Flutist Emma Hammond will perform the first movement from Wolfgang Mozart’s “Flute Concerto No. 1 in G Major,” and violinist Chandler Fadero will play the third movement from Felix Mendelssohn’s “Concerto for Violin in E Minor.”

Violist Jenna Ames will solo in Miklós Rózsa’s “Viola Concerto.” Pianist Fidel Leal performs the first movement from Sergei Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major.”

Appalachian Symphony Band, 2 p.m. Nov. 20, Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts

Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Gray Richardson, an associate director of bands, this ensemble will perform Eric Whitacre’s “October” and Norman Dello Joio’s “Variants on a Medieval Tune.”

Also featured will be Samuel Hazo’s “Arabesque,” Julius Fucik’s “Florentiner” and Richard L. Saucedo’s “Windsprints.”

Appalachian Guitar Orchestra, 8 p.m. Nov. 20

Under the direction of Dr. Douglas James, a professor of guitar, the orchestra will perform several works composed or arranged for an orchestra of guitarists.

The program will feature William Boyce’s “Symphony No. 1”; the “Allegretto” movement from Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7”; Alan Hirsh’s “Greensleeves Fantasy”; and selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”

Victor Li will solo in Rex Willis’ “Homage to Astor Piazzolla.” And Allen Simpson will solo in excerpts from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s “24 Caprichos de Goya.”
