LUNAFEST short films festival to be presented at Appalachian April 6 and in Boone on April 7

BOONE, N.C.—LUNAFEST – an annual fundraising festival of short films dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities – will be presented in two local screenings in April.

Tickets for each screening are $10 for adults, $7 for students. They can be purchased at the door of each screening or at http://www.lunafest.org. All proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and Girls on the Run of the High Country.

The first screening will be at 6:30 p.m. April 6 in the Greenbriar Theater of Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union. A question-and-answer session will follow at 8 p.m.

The second screening will be at 6:30 p.m. April 7 at the Harvest House Performance Center, 247 Boone Heights Drive, in Boone. Intermission will feature complimentary movie snacks and an auction of the winning pieces from “Bra-Va!,” a community competition centered around ways to decorate a bra creatively and festively.

This year’s film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films. The films, which range from animation to fictional drama, cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.

Since LUNAFEST began in 2000, it has raised more than $965,000 for Breast Cancer Fund and over $2.6 million for other women’s non-profit organizations.

The local screenings are hosted by Mast General Store and two Appalachian entities: the Beaver College of Health Sciences and the Women’s Center.
