App State recognizes 4 staff members for excellence

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University recognized four staff members for excellence during the university’s Fall 2019 Faculty and Staff Meeting Friday, Sept. 6, in the Plemmons Student Union.

“Appalachian staff are engaged and invested in the success of our university and are key to our standing as the premier public undergraduate institution in the state,” Chancellor Sheri Everts said. “These four honorees exemplify the commitment and collaborative spirit that is synonymous with Appalachian. We thank them for their service, their vision and their support.”
Mark Bachmeier, director of human resources at Appalachian, presented the 2019 Staff Excellence Awards, which recognize staff members’ exemplary service, commitment, collegiality and leadership to the university community.
“We are inspired annually by this process as we receive nominations from across our campus community recognizing staff members for being exceptional at their jobs, exceptional colleagues and exceptional human beings who support one another and demonstrate a commitment to the mission of our university through their service,” Bachmeier said.
The 2019 recipients are Abby White Gould, Sarah Heustess, Katie Howard ’11 ’15 ’19 and Mary Strong ’16 ’17.
Gould has worked with multiple administrative departments to create procedures and contracts for the RMPE department. She assisted with the BCHS’ transition to the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences by overseeing the RMPE department office move and classroom renovations in the university’s Holmes Convocation Center. She also supervises seven work-study students in the department.
Additionally, Gould serves on Staff Senate, the Staff Shout Out Committee and the Building Emergency Team Committee.
She joined Appalachian’s staff five years ago and the RMPE department three years ago. After moving to Boone from Indiana, she worked as an office manager for two local companies before joining Appalachian.
Sarah Heustess
Heustess, who has been part of the Office of Arts and Cultural Programs staff since 1992, manages ticket sales and patron relations for An Appalachian Summer Festival, The Schaefer Center Presents and the APPlause! K–12 Performing Arts Series, as well as for all campus and community events taking place in the university’s 1,700-seat Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.
She also manages box office staff for Valborg Theatre and Schaefer Center, as well as ticket sales for Department of Theatre and Dance productions and Hayes School of Music events throughout the academic year.
Heustess has cultivated hundreds of relationships with university students, audience members and community arts supporters over the course of her career.
Katie Howard ’11 ’15 ’19
Howard serves as the associate director for grants resources and services in Appalachian’s Office of Research. In this role, she administers limited submission competitions, internal competitions and the internal peer review process.
She is also tasked with exploring better ways to support international research efforts, both on Appalachian’s campus and abroad.
In fiscal year 2018–19, Howard served as chair of Appalachian’s Staff Senate. She has co-chaired the senate’s Events Committee and AppKIDS Superhero 5K Subcommittee for the past two years.
Howard is a three-time graduate of Appalachian. She holds an M.A. in romance languages, a Master of Library Science and dual B.A. degrees in English and Spanish.
Mary Strong ’16 ’17
Strong, who previously served as transition and career coordinator for Appalachian’s Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program (SDAP), is a two-time graduate of the university. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Social Work and is currently pursuing her clinical licensure in social work and addiction.
In her SDAP role at Appalachian, Strong ensured all the program’s students attained gainful employment. She forged lasting partnerships between campus employers as well as local community businesses.
While at Appalachian, Strong also served as a human services counselor on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team of Daymark Recovery Services — a nonprofit organization established to provide comprehensive behavioral health care services as defined by those in the community in need of mental health or substance abuse treatment options. In this role, she assisted individuals with severe/persistent mental illness achieve and maintain quality lives.
Strong has recently joined the staff of Daymark Recovery Services on a full-time basis. Additionally, she teaches as an adjunct instructor in the university’s Department of Social Work.
