BOONE, N.C. — Following a national search, Brad Boswell has been named chief compliance and ethics officer at Appalachian State University, effective March 1.

Boswell previously served as App State’s assistant to the chancellor for athletics, during which time he oversaw the university’s athletics compliance program for 17 varsity sports and approximately 450 student-athletes. Prior to that role, Boswell served as assistant athletics director for compliance at Purdue University. He has also served in compliance roles at the University of Southern California, Georgia Tech and Southern Illinois.

As chief compliance and ethics officer, Boswell will lead the Office of Compliance and Ethics, located in the Division of Institutional Integrity. Boswell will direct a comprehensive university compliance and ethics program, to include coordinating campus units responsible for compliance; guiding and facilitating the formulation, review, publication and implementation of institutional policies and procedures; evaluating compliance risks; and working with affected units and university administration to remediate compliance deficiencies.

The chief compliance and ethics officer reports administratively to the university’s general counsel within the Division of Institutional Integrity. The Office of Compliance and Ethics will include the Office of Athletics Compliance, as well as the Office of Enterprise Risk Management. The chief compliance and ethics officer will report on a regular basis to the chancellor and App State Board of Trustees on the progress of compliance implementation.

Boswell graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in marketing and logistics in 2007 and a Master of Science in sport management in 2009. He received his Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois in 2012.
