BOONE—The Appalachian Journal has published its first special edition on Appalachian music. This double issue (vol. 42, nos. 3-4) is the largest one in the journal’s 42-year history, with 300-plus pages and 60-plus contributors. Guest editors Mark Freed and Trevor McKenzie are both musicians and music teachers who kick off this issue with a roundtable discussion: 25 musicians, teachers and scholars who select and describe their Appalachian “Top 10” playlists, offering lively defenses of their choices.

BOONE—The Appalachian Symphony Band will present its last performance of the semester Dec. 2 at Appalachian State University.

BOONE—An evening of symphonic masterpieces will be performed Nov. 23 by the Appalachian Wind Ensemble from the Hayes School of Music. The 8 p.m. concert will be in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

BOONE—The Appalachian Gospel Choir presents a fall thanksgiving concert Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Solarium at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

A series of performances will be presented Nov. 22 by Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music. Admission to all events is free.

Quintessential is a five-member graduate vocal ensemble from the Hayes School of Music.

The opera theatre is directed by John Fowler from the Hayes School of Music. The theme of the evening, “A Woman Scorned and Other Clichés,” features scenes from 10 well-known operas, from “Don Giovanni” to “Falstaff” and “La Boheme.”
