Appalachian receives $183,000 grant to train international science and English teachers

Appalachian State University has received a $183,000 Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program grant to implement a training program designed to enhance the capacity of 20 teachers representing 17 countries to teach science and English. The TEA Fellows will come from Bangladesh, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, Guatemala, India, Jordan, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Zambia.

Beasley Media Complex, which houses broadcast studios, classrooms, labs and offices for faculty members. A generous gift from Appalachian alumnus George G. Beasley of Naples, Fla., along with state funds and other private donations, have made the media complex a reality.

The center at Northeastern University (NEU) in Shenyang, China, has been funded by a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State and is part of a program initiated by the state department in 2011.

Appalachian professor receives NIH grant to study cholera bacterium’s defense mechanism

The bacterium that causes cholera has been a bit of a mystery to scientists since it was first identified in the mid-1800s. Dr. Ece Karatan, an associate professor in Appalachian State University’s Department of Biology, hopes to unravel some of those mysteries, and in the process find ways to help mitigate the effects of the potentially deadly disease most common in Third World countries and areas with poor sanitation.
