BOONE—Dr. Alicia Chapman, oboe and English horn, and Dr. Karen Robertson, horn, will be featured in a faculty concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 in Rosen Concert Hall of the Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University. This is a Hayes School of Music event; admission is free, and a live stream of the performance will be available at https://music.appstate.edu.
The program – which will also include appearances by baritone David Clark and pianists Christina Hayes and Susan Slingland – will feature music by Vincent Persichetti, Gustav Mahler, Paul Dukas and Carl Reinecke.
The Persichetti piece, from 1973, will be “Parable for English Horn.” “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen,” an art song from Gustav Mahler’s Rueckert-Lieder, will feature singing by Clark.
Dukas’ “Villanelle,” for piano and horn, will get the nod just after intermission. The work, originally written as an exam piece for Paris Conservatory students in 1906, has been noted for its technical challenges and refreshing melodies.
Rounding out the Oct. 5 program will be Reinecke’s Trio in A Minor for Piano, Oboe and Horn, a four-movement work from the 1880s. It’s been praised for a deft dialogue of sorts among the players.
