BOONE—Appalachian State University’s performance series, “The Schaefer Center Presents,” will screen the film “Remember” at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.

In “Remember,” award-nominated director Atom Egoyan creates a fast-paced revenge thriller that intimately addresses the aftermath of the Holocaust. The film tells the story of Zev Guttman, an Auschwitz survivor, who struggles with memory loss. Guttman embarks on a cross-country odyssey to find the former Nazi responsible for the deaths of his family members.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Appalachian faculty members. The panelists will be Dr. Thomas Pegelow Kaplan, the Levine Distinguished Professor of Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies; Dr. Rennie Brantz, a professor in the Department of History; Dr. Rosemary Horowitz, a professor in the Department of English; and Dr. Chris Patti, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication.

About “Remember”

“Remember” tells the story of Zev Guttman, played by Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer, a 90-year-old struggling with memory loss who is living out his final years in a serene retirement home. A week following the death of his beloved wife Ruth, he suddenly gets a mysterious package from his close friend Max, played by Academy Award winner Martin Landau, containing a stack of money and a letter detailing a shocking plan. Both Zev and Max were prisoners in Auschwitz, and the same sadistic guard was responsible for the death of both their families–a guard who, immediately after the war, escaped Germany and has been living in the U.S. ever since under an assumed identity. Max, who gets around in a wheelchair, is in full command of his mental faculties; with his guidance, Zev will embark on a cross-continental road-trip to bring justice once and for all to the man who destroyed both their lives.
