The film explores the history of Western North Carolina’s worst natural disaster. One hundred years ago this past July, 22 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period, raising the French Broad River 17 feet above flood stage and causing extensive flooding throughout the western part of the state.
The symposium will feature two plenary speakers: Dr. Christopher Teuton, who chairs the American Indian Studies department at the University of Washington; and Dr. Janice Willis, a professor emerita of religion at Wesleyan University.
Appalachian State University is ranked seventh among regional universities in the South as a “Best College for Veterans” by U.S. News and World Report. That ranking could be one more reason veterans and active-duty military members select Appalachian.
Both Sage and Small are first-year computer science majors. Each receives a $4,000 per year scholarship in addition to $500 each year for materials such as software or a computer application for research, which the ECRS scholarship promotes.
Both the Global Leadership awards and the Local to Global award recognize “extraordinary contributions of students, faculty and staff who have initiated, developed and/or supported opportunities for global learning.”
