BOONE—The Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents “Slant,” a part juried, part curated exhibition featuring some of the best works made by students in Appalachian’s graphic design and commercial photography programs. The exhibition will be on view Nov. 9-18.
“Slant” is the first exhibition hosted by the Smith Gallery to focus specifically on commercial photography and graphic design as creative practices. It highlights the rich interconnection between these fields to draw attention to shared design and communication strategies.
The juried competition was open to students of all levels. It was highly competitive with the selection committee accepting only 25 pieces out of more than 150 submissions. Criteria for selection included: composition/design, technical mastery, originality, creativity and choice of subject matter. The curated portion of the exhibition features graduating seniors from both programs.
Included are works by Gabby Allen, Alise Blair, Jeremiah Bradshaw, Skylar Brady, Sean Burgess, Katelyn Cartwright, Lauren Crowe, Courtney Dancy, Terrie Do, Ashton Durham, Erin Durham, Cole Finch, Matt Frizzell, Carson Hagger, Rachel Hottel, Dillon Howington, Lauryn Jackson, Kimi Kaste, Zachary Kracht, Annie Lindeman, Dallas Linger, Anthony Lobo, Adam Lucas, Jenna Markiewicz, Jarrod Mayes, Lacy Matusek, Jameson Midgett, Raven Moffett, Kellee Morgado, Tori Morgan, Kim Nguyen, Abby Piette, Christina Pinheiro, Monique Rivera, James Royek, Sarah Shelton, Evanne Stoll, Holly Taber, Shobi Vanamali, Grey Von Cannon, Maddy Weidman, Jason Wright and Sabbath Zwiercan.
The works of these young artists address a wide range of artistic concerns. Gallery Director Jennie Carlisle, said, “This is an exciting group show, offering viewers an opportunity to see some stunning work by very talented young artists. The show will be a real moment of pride for participating artists and the art department.”
A reception for the artists and the exhibition will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Smith Gallery.

The Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents original and traveling exhibitions, features works by faculty and students and enriches its programmatic offerings through collaborative projects. It actively involves students in its exhibitions and programming by serving as a site for honing curatorial, presentation and installation abilities.
