    ‘Dragon prince’ dinosaur may be missing link in T. rex evolution [alumni featured]

    App State alumnus and paleontologist Jared Voris ’16 has discovered a dinosaur closely related to — or possibly the direct ancestor of — all tyrannosaurs. Voris and his colleagues named the new species Khankhuuluu mongoliensis, after the Mongolian words for “prince” and “dragon.” Voris graduated from App State in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in geology.

    A recent study led by Dr. John Whitehead, professor in App State’s Department of Economics, found that recreational fishing trips in the Great Lakes generate $884 million per year. The study is based on approximately 9 million licensed anglers and survey data from nearly 20,000 people. Whitehead’s calculations were based on how much visitors were willing to pay and the estimated number of trips.

    According to a new study, extreme weather events have threatened the global blood supply by disrupting donations, transport and transfusion safety. Dr. Maggie Sugg, associate professor in App State’s Department of Geography and Planning, explains how pregnant women who deal with blood conditions such as postpartum hemorrhage are at particular risk if the supply chain is disrupted. Sugg is a climate and health researcher at the university.
