Robert Thomas "Tommy" Sofield Jr. '76, his wife, Debbie, and the Sofield family have donated a significant gift to Appalachian State University in support of athletics facilities enhancements, including a new multipurpose indoor practice facility.

App State alumna Madison Allred ’22, who graduated with a degree in construction management, is leading an elementary school rebuild in the historic Glenwood neighborhood in Greensboro, located in Guilford County. In what she describes as a “full-circle” moment, Allred graduated from Guilford County Schools as a child. In this feature, Allred talks about her excitement of defying construction stereotypes as a woman in the field, and explains what she hopes to accomplish with this project and future projects.

App State will retire former quarterback Armanti Edwards’ No. 14 jersey number during the Mountaineers’ Nov. 25 home game against Georgia Southern. Edwards led App State to a pair of national titles from 2006-09 and famously helped lead the Mountaineers to a historic upset victory over Michigan in 2007. Edwards graduated from App State in 2010.
App State to retire Armanti Edwards’ number 14

This fall, App State will retire number 14, worn by Armanti Edwards — a record-breaking quarterback who played for the App State Mountaineers from 2006 to 2009. The retirement ceremony will be held at halftime of the App State–Georgia Southern home game on Nov. 25.
Morganton man with limited use of feet, hands graduates from App State

Jullian Harrison, a 37-year-old from Morganton with cerebral palsy, graduated with magna cum laude honors from App State on May 12, earning his bachelor’s degree in social work. Harrison is confined to a wheelchair and has limited use of his hands and arms. He had to work very closely with his trainers to complete his assignments, but he said he never doubted he would graduate college.

App State alumnus Robert Burns ’90 joined the Walton Family Foundation in Arkansas a couple of years ago as director of its Home Region Program. He is now leading the implementation of the foundation’s 2025 Strategy. The five-year commitment will address social and environmental concerns to expand access to opportunities in education and youth engagement, economic asset building for individuals and families, and high-impact coalition building in the region.

App State alumna Donna L. Bledsoe ’04 ’08 was named the 2023 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year. Bledsoe has been the principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School in Surry County since 2016. She was chosen among eight regional principals of the year and the charter school principal of the year.
