Dr. Melanie Honeycutt named 2024 NC Technology Director of the Year [alumni featured]

Dr. Melanie Honeycutt of Burke County Public Schools was named the 2024 North Carolina Technology Director of the Year. She has been an educator for 32 years and has served as Burke County Public Schools’ chief information officer since 2013. Honeycutt is a two-time alumna of App State, where she earned a master’s degree in library science in 1999 and a doctorate in educational leadership in 2013.
Gracie Bullington named App State Student Teacher of the Year

Gracie Bullington was named the 2023-24 App State Student Teacher of the Year. She will be considered for the state level award this fall. Bullington graduated from App State in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in history/social studies education, and she is currently working toward a master’s degree in history with a concentration in teaching. Eight other student teachers were named finalists for the App State Student Teacher of the Year Award. They were: Adam Caliri, Carmen Cerrito, Madison Goodwin, Nadine Jallal, Caroline Jenkins, Bryson May, Rylie Spencer and Julienne Swaringen.

App State held its second annual Awards of Distinction ceremony April 25 on the Boone campus, honoring 27 students, faculty and staff for their commitment to excellence in serving the university and its community members.

App State has been ranked 7th in the nation by Fortune magazine in its list of “Best Master’s in Data Science" programs for 2025. The university was recognized for its Master of Science in applied data analytics program, offered by the Walker College of Business.

App State professor Joseph Bathanti named to North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame

Former North Carolina Poet Laureate and Appalachian State University professor Joseph Bathanti has been named to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame — an honor reserved for five of the state’s most accomplished writers. Bathanti is the author of over 20 books spanning multiple genres including poetry, fiction, nonfiction and personal essays. He will be inducted into the hall during a special ceremony on Oct. 6.
App State MSN alum awarded first place in graduate research category by Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association

Steven Cuzmenco ’23 was awarded first place in the Graduate Capstone category by the Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association (PCNA) for his thesis “Registered Nurses’ Perception of Plant-Based Dietary Patterns: Self-Efficacy, Health Beliefs and Behaviors.” His abstract will be published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, and he is invited to present his findings at the PCNA’s annual cardiovascular symposium in April in Orlando.

Former App State quarterback Armanti Edwards ’09 was announced as a member of the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Edwards guided the App State football team to two national championships in 2006 and 2007, as well as the Mountaineers' famous upset victory over Michigan in 2007.

Hayes School of Music Dean James Douthit inducted into Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame

Dr. James Douthit, dean of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, was recently inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame. Every two years, exemplary piano teachers are selected to receive the honor, which "recognizes the talented educators who foster passion, creativity and discipline in the next generation of piano artists." The induction ceremony was held in the Steinway and Sons factory in Astoria, Queens, New York, and included around 40 teachers from across North America.
