Floridians could pay for Hurricane Milton through surcharges imposed on their insurance policies and potentially higher premiums for property coverage. Dr. Lori Medders, professor in App State’s Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance, noted there was already a lot of pressure on the property insurance market in Florida before hurricanes Helene and Milton and that these events will make the challenged market even worse.

According to McKay, studying centaurs — ice-rich bodies that orbit the sun — can yield important insights into the formation and evolution of Earth’s solar system.

Jewel Davis, an education librarian and professor in University Libraries at App State, has been appointed to serve as chair of the 2026 Randolph Caldecott Award Selection Committee. The Caldecott Medal, established in 1937 and presented annually by the American Library Association, is one of the oldest and most highly regarded awards for children's book illustration in the United States. As committee chair, Davis will lead 14 distinguished librarians from across the nation in evaluating and selecting the most outstanding picture books published in 2025.
