BOONE—Compositions arranged for band based on original works for piano, choir, symphony and King Henry VIII’s court are featured in an Appalachian Symphony Band concert called “Borrowed and Blurred!” The program begins at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts on campus. Admission is free.
The concert is directed by Kevin Gray Richardson, a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty, with graduate conductors Matthew Brusseau and Onsby Rose.
The performance opens with Philip Sparke’s arrangement of “Pastime with Good Company,” written by King Henry VIII. It will be followed by Norman Dello Joio’s “Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn,” based on a theme from a composition for piano by Haydn.
Brusseau will conduct “The Beethoven Machine” composed by Michael Colgrass. The composition is based on a sonatina written by Beethoven when he was a child.
The band also will perform Larry Daehn’s band transcription of “March Slav,” written by Tchaikovsky for orchestra.
The poetry of Robert Burns inspired Percy Aldridge Grainger’s “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon.” Grainger wrote the composition for choir in 1903 and wrote the band setting in 1932.
The band will premier William G. Harbinson’s band arrangement “Of Fire and Ice.” The work was originally composed for the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra and performed in 2012. The title refers to the use of opposing styles throughout the piece – fiery horns and percussion followed by quieter passages, and harmonies contrasted by dissonant passages. Harbinson is a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty and a former dean of the school.
