The 15th Annual Martin and Doris Rosen Summer Symposium on Remembering the Holocaust will be held July 23-28 in Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union. This year’s symposium puts a particular emphasis on the roles and struggles of women in the Holocaust and explores the significance of gender in this genocide.

At the close of the 2016 fiscal year, Appalachian State University’s Office of Research (OR) reported receiving more than $15 million in external funding – grants from government, non-profit agencies, business and industry — which surpassed a goal set in the university’s 2014 – 2019 Strategic Plan to increase grant funding to $15 million by the year 2019.

Appalachian alumna named N.C. French Teacher of the Year

Laura Parker, a 2011 graduate of Appalachian State University’s Master of Arts program in romance languages, was recently named the North Carolina French Teacher of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (NC-AATF). Parker teaches French at Burns High School in Lawndale.

Las Vegas Mob Museum is a repository of the extraordinary and unexpected. The actual wall that caught the bullets from the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day massacre is there. So is the hazmat suit Bryan Cranston wore in his role as Walter White in the hit AMC series “Breaking Bad.” A larger-than-life Dick Tracy cutout, complete with yellow hat and drawn Colt .45, stands guard over one of the exhibits, a pixelated reminder that crime does not pay. But the capper, the big surprise? Against all odds, even in a betting town, two public history majors from Appalachian State University – 2,500 miles to the east – discovered each other working just two cubicles apart.
