BOONE, N.C. — Shayla Marcum, customer service specialist in Appalachian State University’s Office of Admissions, is a Staff Shout Out recipient and recent winner of the Staff Shout Out program’s quarterly drawing. Marcum, who received her Shout Out in March, won a gift from the University Bookstore valued at $25.

The Staff Shout Out program, an informal recognition initiative created by Appalachian’s Staff Recognition Committee — a committee of Staff Senate — aims to highlight Appalachian staff members for their positive contributions to the university. The committee works to improve employee engagement and encourage an environment of support and appreciation.

Carole Greene, chair of Appalachian’s Staff Senate and assistant director for student support services in the university’s Student Learning Center, said, “The Staff Shout Out program is designed for any campus community member who wishes to recognize a staff member for their outstanding work. The program started in January and has grown each month.”

Recipients of a Shout Out will be notified the month following their nomination and will receive a handwritten card detailing why they were nominated. Each recipient is also entered into a quarterly drawing for a gift from the University Bookstore.

“I was surprised and delighted to receive a Staff Shout Out,” Marcum said. “I sincerely appreciate working in such a positive environment.”

Since the program’s inception in January 2018, more than 260 Appalachian staff members have received a Shout Out.

Examples of Shout Out-worthy actions:

  • Going above and beyond to help a fellow co-worker or student.
  • Picking up trash on campus grounds just because.
  • Encouraging recycling in your office.
  • Having an infectious positive attitude.
  • Taking initiative.
  • Helping a co-worker complete a task voluntarily.
  • Random acts of kindness.

Marcum’s nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave Marcum a Shout Out to recognize her “endless dedication to helping students, parents and co-workers.”

One of the ways we encourage positive morale and staff engagement is through an informal recognition program called, "Shout Out." If you would like to have a staff member recognized for their positive contribution to the university, give them a "Shout Out."
