BOONE, N.C. — Dr. Garner Dewey has been named associate dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Appalachian State University after serving as the college’s interim associate dean during the 2017–18 academic year. He officially began his new position July 2.

Dewey, who is also an associate professor in the college’s Department of Applied Design, currently serves as the director of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and held the associate dean position in the college from 2010–13.

“Through Garner’s work at the QEP and his previous experience as associate dean, he brings a background not only in leadership, but also global learning and assessment,” said Phyllis Kloda, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. “I am thrilled to have him continue in the associate dean role and look forward to the ideas and energy he will bring to our new initiatives.”

Dewey obtained his B.S. in industrial education and his M.S. in technology education, both from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, prior to earning his Ph.D. in occupational studies from the University of Georgia.

His teaching and research specialties include computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and 3D modeling, rapid prototyping, multimedia instructional design and international education focusing in Latin America. He is also an avid photographer and integrates nature photography into his research and creative practice.

“I am honored and enthusiastic to be back serving our college as associate dean,” Dewey shared. “My goals for this upcoming year are to assist departments with the development and implementation of assessment plans and to work on initiatives for our college to be more purposeful in becoming inclusive as well as more globally engaged.

“I look forward to working with our dean, the rest of the office personnel, (and the) students, faculty and staff that make this a wonderful college,” he said.
