Staff Shout Out monthly drawing winner
Appalachian State University Staff Shout Out program

BOONE, N.C. — Of the 101 Appalachian State University staff members who received a Shout Out in May, Linda Scherry — loan manager in the university’s Office of Student Financial Aid — has been selected as the winner of the Staff Shout Out program’s monthly drawing. More than 500 Appalachian staff members have been recognized for their Shout Out-worthy service to the university since January.

Scherry received her Shout Out from Melissa Daniel, who at the time of the nomination was a student services specialist in Appalachian’s Office of the Registrar. Daniel is now an administrative support associate in Appalachian's Department of Communication.

In her Shout Out, Scherry was recognized for her volunteer efforts during the university's Spring 2019 Commencement.

“We could not have pulled off the weekend without Linda,” said Daniel, who served as volunteer coordinator for Appalachian’s spring commencement ceremonies.

“Graduation is one of the happiest and most exciting days for our graduates and their families. I volunteered to show support for our graduates’ achievements and to help make their day special and memorable,” Scherry shared. “It brings me joy to see our students receive their diplomas and become Appalachian alumni.”

As loan manager, Scherry oversees all aspects of the Federal Direct Loan and Private/Alternative Loan programs for Appalachian students and their parents — from loan origination to loan disbursement.

The Staff Shout Out program, an informal recognition initiative created by Staff Senate’s Staff Recognition Committee, aims to highlight Appalachian staff members for their positive contributions to the university. The committee works to improve employee engagement and encourage an environment of support and appreciation.

Examples of actions for which Appalachian staff members have received Shout Outs:

  • Going above and beyond to help a fellow co-worker or student.
  • Picking up trash on campus grounds just because.
  • Encouraging recycling among officemates.
  • Having an infectious positive attitude.
  • Taking initiative.
  • Helping a co-worker complete a task voluntarily.
  • Random acts of kindness.

Recipients of a Shout Out are notified the month following their nomination and receive a card detailing why they were nominated, which is handwritten and personally delivered by a member of Staff Senate. Each recipient is also entered into a monthly drawing for a gift from the University Bookstore.

For her drawing prize, Scherry will receive a gift from the University Bookstore valued at $25.

The Staff Recognition Committee, a committee of Staff Senate, works to create a positive work environment, improve employee engagement, and encourage an environment of support and appreciation.

One of the ways we encourage positive morale and staff engagement is through an informal recognition program called, "Shout Out." If you would like to have a staff member recognized for their positive contribution to the university, give them a "Shout Out."
