Campus emergency siren test to be conducted Aug. 2

By Emily Autry
Posted July 25, 2023 at 9:52 a.m.

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University will test its campus siren warning system at 11:55 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2.

Examples of the tones that are used in an emergency or during tests can be heard online by visiting the Siren Warning System webpage on App State’s Emergency Preparedness website.

App State uses the hi/low tone for emergencies, the discontinuous air horn for tests of the system and the alert tone for the all-clear signal.

The AppState-ALERT voice/text/email notification system has been updated to include alerts for the university’s Hickory campus, which will open Aug. 21 — the first day of fall 2023 classes. Students and employees already registered to receive AppState-ALERTS will be automatically enrolled in Hickory campus messages; they may opt out through the Self-Service section of their AppalNet account.

For more information about the university’s AppState-ALERT system, visit App State’s Emergency Preparedness website.

Campus siren tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of each month. Scheduled dates for App State’s upcoming tests are Sept. 6 and Oct. 4.
