    Boone campus population held steady for 5th consecutive year as Hickory campus and online enrollment continue growth

    App State marks its 125th year by enrolling 21,570 students in fall 2024, a 1.5% increase over last fall. The steady growth is supported by intentionally managed enrollment at the Boone campus and significant growth in both the Hickory campus and online student populations.

    The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a seven-year, $35 million grant to App State’s College Access Partnerships to expand its GEAR UP program for middle school and high school students. The award represents the largest single grant ever awarded to the university.

    The seventh class of App State’s Appalachian Police Academy comprises 20 graduates who are now sworn North Carolina police officers working with the App State Police Department while they complete their degrees at App State. To date, the academy has trained nearly 140 sworn police officers.

    App State’s solar vehicle team, Team Sunergy, secured second place in its class in the 2024 Electrek American Solar Challenge and also took home the Spirit of the Event Award. The team’s car, ROSE, completed 1,562 miles over the eight-day, cross-country road race.

    App State has received a $300,000 commitment for the renovation of Wey Hall from Luke Walling, founder of Temprano Techvestors. The gift will provide funding for the establishment of the Cathy P. Walling Student Art Gallery — named in memory of his mother — and for upgrades to labs and studio spaces.

    Host Laura England, associate director of App State’s Quality Enhancement Plan and practitioner-in-residence in the Department of Sustainable Development, talks with Dr. Britt Wray, a researcher and storyteller focused on the mental health impacts of climate change. Wray, director of the CIRCLE initiative at Stanford Psychiatry, explores the intersection of climate science, psychology and communication, and shares her journey in navigating interdisciplinary fields — including conservation biology, science communication and the ethics of synthetic biology. She highlights the importance of storytelling in climate communication.

    App State has been recognized by the NC Department of Environmental Quality for a 48% energy reduction, surpassing the state's goal. This figure, as well as the nearly $2 billion in state energy costs avoided since 2002, was shared at the 2024 Appalachian Energy Summit.
