The program, a presentation of Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music, is titled “To Boldly Go…”

Appalachian’s Joseph Bathanti, professor of creative writing and poet, novelist and essayist, receives the North Carolina Award for Literature.

Selections will include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sonata in D Major, K. 311,” Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sonata in A-flat Major, Op. 26,” Frédéric Chopin’s “Fantasy in F Minor. Op. 49,” and Franz Liszt’s “Sonetto 104 del Petrarca.”

Based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature of the same name, “Journey To The West” is a contemporary remake of the misadventures of a Buddhist monk as he makes a pilgrimage from China to India.

First Year Showcase is a high energy and fast-paced introduction to the Department of Theatre and Dance. First year theatre students quickly form an ensemble and prepare a one act play, either from an original concept or a published work. First year dance students audition for selection in either a faculty or student choreographed dance.

The Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University, through its Math and Science Education Center, will host a Science Seminar Series. Topics range from perpetuating misconceptions as science teachers to changing air quality to using dinosaurs to teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“The Liberator” tells the story of Simón Bolivar, a South American general who fought over 100 battles against the Spanish Empire.

“The Quispe Girls” is a Chilean film based on the true story of three sister shepherds, who lived a solitary life until a new law challenged them to question their existence and the meaning of their lives.

Chapdelaine is an award-winning classical guitarist, a professor of music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico. His performances have earned him top awards in classical and fingerstyle genres in the world’s top competitions. This recital is free and open to the public.
