BOONE—The Appalachian Trumpet Choir of Appalachian State University will perform music from several periods at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the university campus. This is a Hayes School of Music event. Admission is free.
Dr. James Stokes Jr., a professor of trumpet at Appalachian, will share conducting duties with Dr. Joe Phelps, a professor emeritus of music at Appalachian. Phelps taught trumpet at Appalachian for 30 years and now teaches at the university part time.
The 22-member choir helps Appalachian’s trumpet students achieve the kind of optimal blend and intonation they can bring to other school ensembles. The group’s members play pieces written for between four and 13 parts, with varying numbers of players on each part. Often, music is punctuated with percussion.
The trumpet choir’s Oct. 17 program will consist of music originally written for trumpet choir or arranged for it. The pieces originally written for trumpet choir will include Eric Ewazen’s “Prelude and Fugue for Trumpet Choir” and Eric Morales’ “Metallic Fury,” which was inspired by Metallica, the famed heavy metal band.
Music for trumpets is often associated with the Baroque and the musical periods that came before it. The program will reflect that with arranged selections by J.S. Bach and Samuel Scheidt. Also featured will be arranged excerpts from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird.”
The program will even take a patriotic turn with “America the Beautiful.”
