    Seven Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship recipients were recognized at a ceremony Friday, Oct. 21, in the Solarium of the Plemmons Student Union – four of whom potentially will complete four years at Appalachian State University incurring no in-state tuition and fees.

Carol Tyler and Robert Olen Butler, the two writers slated to conclude the current series’ fall season, would certainly appear to uphold the “club” standards laid out by series’ director Joseph Bathanti, the former poet laureate of North Carolina.

    The film explores the history of Western North Carolina’s worst natural disaster. One hundred years ago this past July, 22 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period, raising the French Broad River 17 feet above flood stage and causing extensive flooding throughout the western part of the state.

    Appalachian’s Board of Trustees adopted a resolution in support of underrepresented students on Friday, Sept. 23. Appalachian’s Faculty Senate adopted a similar resolution on Monday, Sept. 19. On Wednesday, Sept. 28, Chancellor Sheri N. Everts announced a change in the facilities use policy related to chalking messages on university sidewalks.
