App State alumnus and former NFL head coach Steve Wilks ’92 and his wife have made a gift to the university’s Keep Climbing initiative that includes establishing the Steve and Marcia Wilks Post-Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship. The yearly scholarship will support one student-athlete from an underrepresented population who is pursuing a graduate degree at App State.

Appalachian English majors Jay Phillips and Victoria Goff have been named winner and runner-up, respectively, of the university’s Truman Capote Literary Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing in poetry for 2020–21. As the winner, Phillips was awarded a $3,649 scholarship.
App State students awarded record number of Gilman Scholarships for 2021 study abroad

The six Gilman Scholars are the most Appalachian students to be recognized in a single Gilman award cycle. Each will receive up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad during 2021, with additional funding available for the study of critical languages overseas.

Jane McIntyre Barghothi ’96 has been named Appalachian State University’s vice chancellor for university advancement. Barghothi has served as senior associate vice chancellor for university development since July 2019.

Five Appalachian alumnae have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants for the 2020–21 academic year — a new record for the university. Appalachian was named a top producing institution for Fulbright students among master’s institutions for the 2019–20 grant year.

Many of Appalachian’s 2019–20 Fulbright scholars were overseas when COVID-19 took hold. Though these faculty members have since returned to the U.S., they have opted to continue their work remotely — demonstrating the importance of fostering international connections, especially during a global pandemic.
