Appalachian junior Sope Kahn, a gender, women’s and sexuality studies major, is the recipient of the 2017-18 Frances Holland Black Scholarship. In March, Kahn participated in the Southeastern Women’s Studies Association Conference.

Three Appalachian students — Laurel Roser, Rhiannon Reed-Kelly and Keylen Renteria — are the recipients of the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and will study abroad during the 2018 spring semester. Named for retired Congressman Gilman, the scholarship program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go.

Five Appalachian legacy first-year students earn Alumni Memorial Scholarships

Five first-year students at Appalachian State University have received an Alumni Memorial Scholarship (AMS), awarded by the Appalachian Alumni Association to children of the university’s graduates. The scholarship recipients are Jonathan Winbush of Winston-Salem; Tamia Gowens of Greensboro; Ayah Hatcher of Raleigh; and Jordan Moore of Indian Trail. The scholarship is named for Dr. Willie C. Fleming, Appalachian’s chief diversity officer.
Appalachian awards 10 students Diversity Scholarships for 2017-18

The Diversity Scholarship is given to students who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic achievement, a willingness to create positive change and a commitment to the principles of diversity. The scholarship covers full in-state tuition and fees for eight semesters, plus special service, leadership and travel opportunities. All first-year students are eligible for the scholarship.
