“To receive the appreciation from my fellow co-workers gave me a wonderful feeling that I will carry with me for some time. I love working at Appalachian State University and the Bookstore.”

BOONE, N.C. — The July drawing of Appalachian State University’s Staff Shout Out program has yielded a winner — LuAnn Greene, an accounting technician in the University Bookstore at Appalachian. Greene received a gift from the University Bookstore valued at $25.

The Staff Shout Out program, an informal recognition initiative created by Appalachian’s Staff Recognition Committee — a committee of Staff Senate — aims to highlight Appalachian staff members for their positive contributions to the university. The committee works to improve employee engagement and encourage an environment of support and appreciation.

Greene received two Shout Outs during July from anonymous members of the Appalachian Community.

Greene’s supervisor, Steve Jepson, business manager and interim director of the University Bookstore, said, “I am not surprised that LuAnn has received two Shout Outs. She is the kind of person that will bend over backward to help someone. She is an important part of our team. We are lucky to have her.”

Katie Howard, Staff Senate chair and assistant director of grants resources and services in Appalachian’s Office of Research, remarked on the success of the program: “We are thrilled with how successful the Staff Shout Out program has been and continues to be. It just goes to show how many Appalachian staff members are going above and beyond every day, and that people are noticing.”

One of Greene’s nominators said, “LuAnn is a wonderful help at the Bookstore. She is quick to respond to and help with any need. I really appreciate her willingness to step up to any task. She is very much appreciated!”

“LuAnn is always happy and pleasant to work with. She works hard to keep the Bookstore running smoothly. She is an asset to the Bookstore team,” Greene’s second nominator shared.

When Greene learned she had been recognized with not one, but two Staff Shout Outs, she said she was “pleasantly surprised.”

“To receive the appreciation from my fellow co-workers gave me a wonderful feeling that I will carry with me for some time,” Greene said. “I love working at Appalachian State University and the Bookstore. Also, the YETI mug is great.”

Recipients of a Shout Out are notified the month following their nomination and receive a card detailing why they were nominated, which is handwritten and personally delivered by a member of Staff Senate. Each recipient is also entered into a monthly drawing for a gift from the University Bookstore.

Examples of Shout Out-worthy actions:

  • Going above and beyond to help a fellow co-worker or student.
  • Picking up trash on campus grounds just because.
  • Encouraging recycling in your office.
  • Having an infectious positive attitude.
  • Taking initiative.
  • Helping a co-worker complete a task voluntarily.
  • Random acts of kindness.

A total of 429 Staff Shout Outs have been given as of July.

One of the ways we encourage positive morale and staff engagement is through an informal recognition program called, "Shout Out." If you would like to have a staff member recognized for their positive contribution to the university, give them a "Shout Out."
