App State named eight Beaver College of Health Sciences students as Beaver Scholars for the 2021–22 academic year. The scholarship — established in 2019 by App State alumnus Don Beaver ’62 ’64 and his wife, Vickie Beaver, the couple for whom the college is named — provides support to North Carolina students with a commitment to health care careers.

Ghouls, ghosts and goblins gathered on App State’s campus — and virtually — Oct. 16 for the 11th annual Spooky Duke Race and Costume Contest. The event raised more than $25,000 to benefit App State’s Parent to Parent Family Support Network-High Country, which assists regional families who have children with special needs.
Pavilion at App State’s Kidd Brewer Stadium honors Robert ‘Bob’ Hatley

The Hatley Pavilion, which encompasses a west-side turf area at the stadium’s north end zone facility, has been named in recognition of a $500,000 TowneBank Foundation gift to App State Athletics in honor of Robert “Bob” Hatley ’72.

16 App State students develop professional skills through SECU Foundation internships

This spring and summer, 16 App State students served their local and regional communities as participants in the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Public Fellows Intern Program. The program, funded by the SECU Foundation, is designed to help students develop their professional skills as they work with leaders of community-based businesses, nonprofits or government agencies.

Specht, who has served as dean of App State’s College of Arts and Sciences since 2017, will assume the role of vice provost for faculty policies and development Oct. 11. She has 25 years of experience at App State, holding various leadership positions and serving on numerous committees.
History and tradition — App State’s 4th annual Founders Day celebration

App State celebrated its history and traditions during the fourth annual Founders Day, Sept. 17. The day’s events included a Bell Ringers Society ceremony and a lecture and tour of the historic Boone Cemetery, along with AppalFest on Sanford Mall.
New name for App State’s Founders Hall honors benefactor who was born there

App State’s Founders Hall has a new name: Watson-Brumit Hall. The building was dedicated on Sept. 18, in honor of Janice Watson Brumit ’75 — a distinguished alumna and benefactor who was born in the building when it was Watauga County Hospital.
