    In follow up to Saturday’s communication, we wanted to provide you with an update on a case of mumps in an Appalachian State University student, which was confirmed on April 7. While at this time, we have not detected additional cases of mumps, we remain on heightened alert for anyone with signs and symptoms compatible with mumps.

This delightful play combines traditional tales from African, European, and Native American cultures and introduces young audiences to Anansi the Spider from Africa, Reynard the Fox from Europe, and the Native American trickster, Raven.

    The gala concert featured 10 works chosen by conference adjudicators, including “Tiny Potato on the Train,” by Assistant Professor of Dance Studies Cara Hagan, and “From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried,” which was choreographed by Juliet Irving, a junior dance studies and graphic design double major.

    Robert Gipe is a graduate of Wake Forest University, with a master’s degree in American Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He lives in Harlan, Kentucky, and works as the director of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, where he is a key producer of Higher Ground, a series of community-based musical dramas inspired by oral histories and local issues.

    The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University invites the community to explore its current exhibitions as part of the First Friday Downtown Boone Art Crawl. The opening will also feature refreshments and live music.

    As part of a continued exploration of Civil War themes this semester, the Department of History at Appalachian will host Dr. Curt Fields for “An Evening with General Ulysses S. Grant: The Man Behind the Uniform.” Fields is the National Park Service representative for Grant. He has portrayed the commanding general of the Union Army in films, posters and re-enactments.

    Appalachian State University and Watauga County reached an agreement on April 4 for the university to purchase the old Watauga High School property located at 400 High School Drive in Boone. In exchange for the property, the university will pay $15.5 million over 20 years, and turn over ownership of its Business Affairs Annex building, located at 1039 State Farm Road in Boone.
