    Col. Kyle A. Reed is no stranger to Fort Bragg, having spent a decade — nearly half of his 21-year career — on the post. From 1999 to 2010 he held a number of positions within the 82nd Airborne Division, mostly with the 1st Brigade Combat Team. He deployed with those units to Iraq and Afghanistan. And at one point in that span, he commanded the Advanced Airborne School at Fort Bragg.

Host Frank Stasio talks about the science of the sun with astronomer Rachel Smith. Smith heads the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and is a professor of physics and astronomy at Appalachian State University.

Two other Appalachian students were awarded honorable mentions at the competition as well.

    David Shumate, a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State, will replace retired Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Harris as the radio voice of Duke basketball and football. Duke announced Monday that Shumate has been named the director of broadcasting for the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network.
