This August communities across the United States will witness a total solar eclipse for the first time almost 100 years. Host Frank Stasio talks about the science of the sun with astronomer Rachel Smith. Smith heads the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and is a professor of physics and astronomy at Appalachian State University.

Huff appointed Dean of the Beaver College of Health Services

Dr. Marie Huff, has been named dean of the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University. She was most recently dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

More than 100 craftworkers looked upward, many with visible pride, as the final steel beam was lifted by crane to the top of Appalachian’s Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) facility June 8. The building is slated to open in August of 2018.

Appalachian students bring home honors in international lighting design competition

Technology graduate student Hazel Chang’s design, “Sonata Music Classical Skybox,” was recognized as the winning entry at LIGHTFAIR® International, the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference. Two other Appalachian students were awarded honorable mentions at the competition as well.
App State grad Shumate to follow Bob Harris as voice of Duke basketball, football

David Shumate, a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State, will replace retired Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Harris as the radio voice of Duke basketball and football. Duke announced Monday that Shumate has been named the director of broadcasting for the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network.
Appalachian’s Risk Management and Insurance Program named Global Center of Insurance Excellence

The designation is awarded to universities with outstanding risk management and insurance programs, and in selecting designees, the International Insurance Society considers such factors as accreditation, curriculum, involvement with industry and faculty qualifications.

Among the six new Wilson Scholars at Appalachian State University this year are a published author, the founder of a non-profit charity and an advocate for women’s empowerment. One recipient has worked to relieve hunger in his community. Another has promoted community involvement and drug- and alcohol-free schools, while yet another is passionate about environmental advocacy.
