Appalachian was selected as one of eight institutions within the UNC system charged with establishing a laboratory school in districts with more than 25 percent of schools identified according to state guidelines as “low performing.” The Board of Governors selected Appalachian because of the quality of its educator preparation program.

Appalachian awards 10 students Diversity Scholarships for 2017-18

The Diversity Scholarship is given to students who have demonstrated leadership potential, academic achievement, a willingness to create positive change and a commitment to the principles of diversity. The scholarship covers full in-state tuition and fees for eight semesters, plus special service, leadership and travel opportunities. All first-year students are eligible for the scholarship.

Bergman attended college at Appalachian State University in North Carolina earning his bachelors of science degree in chemistry. During his education, a professor gained Bergman’s attention and friendship over they’re combined fondness for craft beers.
