Four students from Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business won the N.C. CFA Institute Research Challenge held in Greensboro, besting student teams from Elon University, N.C. State University and UNC Wilmington.
Mitchell Townley, a junior music education major at Appalachian State University, recently was accepted as a semi-finalist for the National Trumpet Competition’s undergraduate solo division. He will perform “Legend” by George Enesco.

Dr. J. Sid Clements of Boone has been named a Fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Clements is a professor of physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University.
After a national search, Robin Tyndall has been named director of research protections at Appalachian State University. Tyndall has served as the interim director since August 2014, and previously was assistant director.
Following a national search, Dr. Jean DeHart has been named chair of the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University. DeHart served as interim chair following Dr. Janice Pope, who returned to the faculty.
Dr. Robert Hill, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Appalachian State University, has been reappointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to a three-year term on the North Carolina Psychology Board.
Debbie Race comes to the university from UNC Asheville where she had served as university registrar for seven years. She also held positions at UNCA as associate registrar, director of advising and registration services, and coordinator of advising and retention.
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has announced that Dr. Tina McCorkindale, Ph.D., APR, has been elected to a two-year term as PRSSA 2015-2017 National Faculty Adviser on the National Committee, starting June 1.
Dr. Vickie Hughes, an associate professor in the Department of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University, has been appointed to serve on Rep. Virginia Foxx’s Service Academy Nomination Board. Foxx represents North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District.
Appalachian State University is among the most environmentally responsible colleges listed in “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition.” The guide was created in collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Dr. Jennifer Snodgrass from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music received the 2012 College Music Society Technology Initiative Award during the national meeting of the College Music Society (CMS).
