Appalachian recognizes Summeys as Family of the Year

The Summey family’s dedication to Appalachian, and each other, was recognized by the Office of Parent and Family Services when they received the inaugural Family of the Year Award at the Family Recognition Breakfast on Oct. 21. The new award recognizes the important role students’ families play in their college success and is open to all Appalachian students.

Dr. Harry Williams Named President & CEO of Thurgood Marshall College Fund

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community, awarded Dr. Harry Lee Williams '86 '88 '95 its Educational Leadership Award and announced him as the new TMCF President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Williams will end his distinguished tenure as president of Delaware State University.

A new endowment fund and meeting and networking space at Appalachian State University have been established to honor Dr. Albert L. Harris, a longtime professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems and Supply Chain Management in the Walker College of Business (WCOB).

New trustees sworn in, chancellor marks progress on priorities at Board of Trustees meeting

New and reappointed members of Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees were sworn in during the Sept. 22 board meeting, with James Barnes of Raleigh being named chair. Also during the meeting, Chancellor Sheri N. Everts shared enrollment data and the board approved a resolution making a regional wildflower the official flower of the university.

Five Appalachian legacy first-year students earn Alumni Memorial Scholarships

Five first-year students at Appalachian State University have received an Alumni Memorial Scholarship (AMS), awarded by the Appalachian Alumni Association to children of the university’s graduates. The recipients are Hannah Marie Dalness, Amanda Fields, Ethan Hahn, Alexander McGuire and Michael Williams.

Judson MacDonald named Appalachian’s 2016-17 Outstanding Student Teacher of the Year

MacDonald, who is the son of Jay and Teresa MacDonald, is originally from Cary. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Spanish education in May 2017. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in romance languages as an accelerated admissions student.

Dr. Davis Hankins of Appalachian State University is one of 10 winners of the Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise this year. He received this award for his work “The Book of Job and the Immanent Genesis of Transcendence” (Northwestern University Press, 2015).
Alumni Daugherty and Rogers inducted into the Reich College of Education Rhododendron Society

Appalachian alumni James Daugherty ’93 ’94 and Julia Kay “Kay” Rogers ’69 ’76 were inducted into the Rhododendron Society on July 21 at a brunch held on campus. As the highest honor given by the Reich College of Education, the award honors alumni for their exemplary service to education and to their communities.
