    Aaron Ballance ’04, lecturer in the Appalachian State University’s Department of English, is the recipient of the North Carolina Humanities Council’s 2017 Linda Flowers Literary Award for his poems “Sugarfoot,” “Old Trouble,” “The Peaks,” “One-Eyed Jenny,” “The Brink,” “Leading Flash to the Barn — January” and “Rust.”

    Jackson Barbee, an Appalachian freshman and management major from Cary, won first place in the fall 2017 Big Idea Pitch Competition held on Nov. 10, 2017 for his idea of a bag designed specifically for rock climbers. Second prize went to the creator of an online role-playing game for the visually impaired and third prize was awarded for a proposed mobile barbershop app.

    The award is given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the preservation of local, regional and statewide history. Clark was specifically recognized for his decades of teaching, as well as his writing, which explores North Carolina’s prehistoric Native Americans and its earliest colonial era, when Spanish soldiers marched across the Carolinas.

    Dr. Robert Hill, an associate professor of psychology in Appalachian State University’s Department of Psychology, was appointed as a member who is a licensed psychologist to the North Carolina Board of Psychology by Gov. Roy Cooper. The appointment is a three-year term, which expires in 2020.

    The Summey family’s dedication to Appalachian, and each other, was recognized by the Office of Parent and Family Services when they received the inaugural Family of the Year Award at the Family Recognition Breakfast on Oct. 21. The new award recognizes the important role students’ families play in their college success and is open to all Appalachian students.

    The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community, awarded Dr. Harry Lee Williams '86 '88 '95 its Educational Leadership Award and announced him as the new TMCF President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Williams will end his distinguished tenure as president of Delaware State University.

    New and reappointed members of Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees were sworn in during the Sept. 22 board meeting, with James Barnes of Raleigh being named chair. Also during the meeting, Chancellor Sheri N. Everts shared enrollment data and the board approved a resolution making a regional wildflower the official flower of the university.
