    Appalachian State Giving Day raises over $2.8M to support students, scholarships and vital programs

    The annual event broke fundraising and participation records, with 3,500+ supporters

    Appalachian State Giving Day raised more than $2.8 million in support of programs and initiatives across the university — a new fundraising record for the university. This year’s event also broke records for participation, with over 3,500 Mountaineers and friends of App State making contributions that support academics, athletics and the arts.

    App State ROTC Cadet Jake Cannon has earned the U.S. Army Cadet Command George C. Marshall Award, recognizing his leadership, academic excellence, physical fitness and officer potential. He was among the top 5% of cadets nationwide to receive the honor and was named the Southeast’s top-ranked cadet.

Thompson received the Chancellor’s Award, and McBride is the Provost’s Award winner.

    App State’s Department of Theatre and Dance and Hayes School of Music are collaborating to bring the musical comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” — based on the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea” — to life for university and regional audiences. Five performances are scheduled to take place April 15–19 in Valborg Theatre on the Boone campus.

    At its three Fall 2025 Commencement ceremonies, held Dec. 12, App State conferred degrees upon more than 1,500 Mountaineer graduates. University supporters Barbara Freiman and G.A. Sywassink were awarded honorary doctorates, and Dr. Charlie Chen was recognized with the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award.

    App State celebrated its eighth annual Founders Day on Oct. 2 to commemorate its founders, B.B., D.D. and Lillie Shull Dougherty, and the first day of classes held at Watauga Academy in 1899. Seven new members were inducted into the university’s Bell Ringers Society as part of the day’s events.

    On Oct. 3, Dr. Heather H. Norris was formally installed as the eighth chancellor in App State’s 126-year history. UNC System President Peter Hans presided over the installation ceremony, which was held on the Boone campus and attended by hundreds of Mountaineers and community members, as well as state education and community leaders.
