    Appalachian police receive training to treat opioid overdoses with Narcan

    Even though Appalachian State University has no significant problem with opioid overdoses, its University Police Department stands ready to help were such emergencies to occur. Members of the Appalachian police, with the support of Project Lazarus, were recently trained in the use of Narcan — an emergency medication used to treat opioid overdoses.

    Appalachian State University Police announced last month that its officers are officially trained and equipped to administer the anti-overdose medication Naloxone. Naloxone counters the effects of opioids in the system and can be effective at bringing someone out of an overdose episode, according to University Police Chief Andy Stephenson.

    N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein led the first of four collegiate council meetings within the UNC system to work with students on combating opioid addiction on college campuses. The meeting, held at Appalachian State University on Oct. 16, included representatives from Appalachian, Western Carolina University, UNC-Asheville, East Carolina University, N.C. State, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

    One case of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, was confirmed in Watauga County on October 16, 2017. The case is in an Appalachian State University student. County and university health officials report the individual diagnosed with pertussis is being treated, per guidelines established by the State of North Carolina and the Centers for Disease Control, and is fully cooperating in following isolation instructions.

The walk is a community gathering to remember and support both victims and survivors of interpersonal violence that started after an Appalachian staff member, Jeni Gray, was raped and killed in 1989.
