Appalachian State University has marked its best fundraising year in more than a decade. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, the university raised more than $36 million, including $31 million in cash gifts — the largest cash fundraising year in university history.

A new collection of seven sculptures has been unveiled on App State’s campus as part of the university’s Arts Corridor. The artworks — installed in mid-August and created by artists from across North Carolina — will be displayed on campus for two years.

Four acclaimed authors — Savannah Sipple, Neema Avashia, Leigh Ann Henion and Scott Blackburn — will visit App State’s campus this fall as part of the 2022–23 Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. The authors will read from their work and deliver talks on the craft of writing.

National Geographic Explorer and App State geography professor Baker Perry led App State students on their study abroad program in Peru — then spearheaded the effort to install the highest weather station in the Tropical Andes as part of the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition

Elected officials and local dignitaries joined App State and Elkin City Schools educators and staff on Aug. 23 to celebrate the opening of App State’s second laboratory school — one of nine operating as part of the University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative.

App State has awarded the Bill and Hughlene Frank Scholarship to three new Guilford County students for the 2022–23 academic year. The scholarship honors the legacy of the Frank family, longtime friends of the university.

A summer program developed by App State’s Beaver College of Health Sciences provides young students the opportunity to improve their language and literacy skills — while learning healthy eating habits. The program pairs snack preparation and sampling with a speech-language pathology curriculum.

App State’s Child Development Center expansion is nearing completion, allowing the center to serve 54 additional students. The center is also celebrating achievement of accreditation through the Pathways to Accreditation program, offered by the Children’s Council of Watauga County.

Anita Greene and Quson Brown were sworn in to terms on the App State Board of Trustees on June 17. Greene, who was appointed to the board by the UNC System Board of Governors, will serve until 2023, and Brown, App State’s student body president for 2022–23, will serve a one-year term.
