App State students awarded record number of Gilman Scholarships for 2021 study abroad

The six Gilman Scholars are the most Appalachian students to be recognized in a single Gilman award cycle. Each will receive up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad during 2021, with additional funding available for the study of critical languages overseas.
App State College of Fine and Applied Arts welcomes Dean’s Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion

Appalachian’s College of Fine and Applied Arts has named Cara Hagan as its Dean’s Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion, a role she assumed in July. Hagan is an associate professor of dance studies in the college and president of Appalachian’s Black Faculty and Staff Association.

Appalachian’s Dr. Megen Culpepper, Dr. Leah Hamilton, Dr. Vicky Klima and Dr. Rachel Wilson have been accepted into the 2020 BRIDGES Academic Leadership for Women program. The theme of this year’s program is “Leading in a Time of Transformation.”

Dr. Conrad E. “Ozzie” Ostwalt, professor of religious studies at Appalachian, has been appointed interim director of the university’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Appalachian studies academic program. Ostwalt assumed his new role July 1.
‘A history told by the people’: ‘Junaluska: Oral Histories’ features Boone’s historic Black community

Appalachian’s Belk Library and Information Commons hosted an online book talk on “Junaluska: Oral Histories of a Black Appalachian Community,” a collection of narratives from Boone’s historically Black community edited by Dr. Susan Keefe. The retired Department of Anthropology professor worked closely with the community since the 1970s.
App State art professor awarded fellowship for book on spatial history of British colonial prisons in India

Appalachian art professor Dr. Mira Rai Waits has been named a 2020 American Council of Learned Societies Fellow for her book project “Colonial Carcerality: The Birth of the Modern Prison in India,” which explores the spatial history of British colonial prisons in India.
