    In fall 2013, new and returning broadcast students were among the first in Appalachian State University's new 18,000 square-foot George G. Beasley Media Complex, which houses broadcast studios, classrooms, labs and offices for faculty members. A generous gift from Appalachian alumnus George G. Beasley of Naples, Fla., along with state funds and other private donations, have made the media complex a reality.

    Part of the reason we take our students to Cuba on these programs is we are trying to train them to be critical thinkers and policy shapers as we move in to the next century.     Students in Appalachian's Honors College are required to complete an international education experience either during the summer or an academic semester to gain a broader understanding of the world and diversify their learning. The 2012 freshman class of Chancellor's Scholars, 10 students on full scholarship and members of The Honors College, took to James Joyce's Dublin for a crash course in Irish history, sports and scholarship.
