App State recognizes Alumni Awards winners

Appalachian has recognized three graduates as winners of its annual Alumni Awards. Avery B. Hall Sr. ’93 and Ronald “Steve” Norwood ’80 each received a 2019 Outstanding Service Award, and Jonathan Kappler ’05 received the 2019 Young Alumni Award.

Hall, a 1999 Appalachian Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, is a member of the Appalachian State University Foundation Inc. Board of Directors and has previously served on the university’s Board of Trustees.
Entrepreneur Ronald ‘Steve’ Norwood ’80 wins 2019 Outstanding Service Award

Norwood, who is founder and CEO of Consolidated Asset Recovery Systems, serves on Appalachian’s Transportation Insight for Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. His 2016 donation initiated the Appalachian Student Venture Fund, enabling students to launch start-ups while promoting local and regional economic development.

Kappler, who serves as chief of staff to the state’s deputy secretary for behavioral health and intellectual and developmental disabilities, is a past president of Appalachian’s Alumni Association and has served on numerous university advisory boards.

New Leech Species Discovered in Southern Maryland

Smithsonian’s curator of parasitic worms and researchers from Canada and Mexico discovered the first new medicinal leech species in North America in decades — in southern Maryland. Research zoologist Anna Phillips first became interested in working with parasites as an undergraduate student at Appalachian State University, where she applied for a selective research internship with programs on many species.
