Appalachian’s Sornito-Carter, an assistant professor of anthropology, will travel to the University of the Philippines Visayas in August 2020 to complete Fulbright research on heritage conservation and disaster management in relation to climate change in the Philippines.
Fulbright Scholar Dr. David Williams to study biopharmaceutical ecosystems in Austria

Entrepreneur Ronald ‘Steve’ Norwood ’80 wins 2019 Outstanding Service Award

Norwood, who is founder and CEO of Consolidated Asset Recovery Systems, serves on Appalachian’s Transportation Insight for Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. His 2016 donation initiated the Appalachian Student Venture Fund, enabling students to launch start-ups while promoting local and regional economic development.
App State recognizes Young Alumni Award winner Jonathan Kappler ’05

Kappler, who serves as chief of staff to the state’s deputy secretary for behavioral health and intellectual and developmental disabilities, is a past president of Appalachian’s Alumni Association and has served on numerous university advisory boards.

Appalachian Police Academy celebrates second graduating class

Fifteen recruits graduated from the Appalachian State University Police Academy in August and all passed the examination to become certified North Carolina police officers. This marks the academy’s second graduating class. Of last year’s graduating class, 100 percent are employed or pursuing further education.
